この冬は、新型コロナウイルスとの話題と関連して、『殺菌』スプレーや『除菌』シートなど、菌を殺すというニュアンスの似たような用語を目にすることが多くなりました。
製品によって、「除菌」「抗菌」「殺菌」など、それぞれ違う用語が書かれていますが、その違いは何だと思いますか？
「滅菌」・・・菌の制御に関して、最も厳格な対応。日常生活ではあまり耳にする機会はないが、病院での手術器具や注射には滅菌が必要とされる。
「殺菌」・・・特定の菌を死滅させる作用で、菌の種類や数は問わない。すべての菌を殺さなくても、数が減れば殺菌といえる。
「消毒」・・・病原性のある微生物を死滅させ、害のない程度まで減らしたり感染力を失わせたりして無毒化させること。
「除菌」・・・菌を取り除くこと。殺菌も「除菌」に含まれるが、医薬品や医薬部外品以外では「殺菌」を謳えないため、この表現がよく使われる。極論を言えば「水洗い」でも除菌したと言える。
「抗菌」・・・菌の増殖を抑制、または菌が生存しにくい環境をつくること。
効果や法律によっていろいろな言葉が使い分けられていますが、その言葉から受けるイメージと実際の効果の差が大きいこともありますね。
それぞれの言葉を正しく理解し、適切な対策グッズを使用することをおすすめします。

Different terms such as “disinfection”, “antibacterial”, and “sterilization” are written on each product, but what do you think is the difference?
“Sterilization” … the strictest response to the control of bacteria. It is not often heard in daily life, but sterilization is required for surgical instruments and injections in hospitals.
“Sterilization” … the action of dying a specific fungus, regardless of the type or number of bacteria. Even if all bacteria are not killed, it can be said that sterilization if the number decreases.
“Disinfection” … to destroy pathogenic microorganisms, reduce them to a level of no harm, or cause them to become non-toxic by losing their infectivity.
“Disinfection” … to get rid of bacteria. Sterilization is also included in “disinfection”, but this expression is often used because “sterilization” cannot be claimed except for pharmaceuticals and quasi-drugs. It can be said that it disinfected even in “Washing with water” if the extreme theory is said.
“Antibacterial”: To suppress the growth of bacteria or to create an environment in which bacteria are difficult to survive.
Various words are used differently depending on the effect and the law, but there is a big difference between the image received from the word and the actual effect.
